An Aboriginal-owned-and-operated community housing provider will be able to supply a bush tucker garden for nine disadvantaged Aboriginal Elders who live together in Medina, thanks to a P&N Bank Helping &nds grant.
Noongar Mia Mia, a culturally secure and truly welcoming not-for-profit, operates through a unique intergenerational holistic model grounded in culture, sleeping around 490 people every night and delivering support services for Perth’s rough sleepers.
The group is formally recognised as the peak body for Aboriginal people living on Noongar country, providing affordable housing exclusively to Aboriginal people and their families.
The bush tucker garden will provide access to healthy, fresh and culturally appropriate foods, while allowing the residents to share seasonal land management knowledge and cooking with their grandkids
Noongar Mia Mia Managing Director, Tina Pickett, said a home is so much more than four walls and a roof; it’s about quality of life and wellbeing.
“Noongar Mia Mia strives to give our mob access to culturally appropriate spaces where they can put their love of culture into practice,” said Tina.
“We’re delighted that our Elders will now have access to these spaces and can share their love of land, nature and knowledge with their grannies.
“They’ll be able to pass on cultural knowledge and traditions about the Noongar six seasons and how to live in harmony with nature, and spend time together as a thriving co-living community.”
General Manager P&N Bank, Angela Newland, said encouraging and supporting a diverse and inclusive community is a key focus for P&N Bank.
“We know that when people work together, individuals, families, groups and our community will flourish,” Angela said.
“On behalf of our customers, we are proud to be able to provide support to WA community groups and small not-for-profits, such as Noongar Mia Mia, through P&N Bank’s Helping &nds program so they can do what they do best – support the local community.”
